Issue
Time saving method of running a Windows 95 or Windows 98 re-install on the Tecra 8000.
Procedure
This technote assumes that Windows 95 or Windows 98 is running on the subject machine and that the CD-ROM can be accessed. This technote describes an alternate way to run the Windows 95 or Windows 98 and Applications recovery CD re-install without erasing the entire hard drive.

Data and other irreplaceable files should be backed up prior to this procedure as a precaution.

This procedure rewrites the Registry, and thus may necessitate re-installing software that makes use of the Registry. Examples are large software packages such as Microsoft Office, FrontPage, Internet Explorer, Netscape, Lotus SmartSuite, and others.

Time savings are realized because this procedure does not erase files on the hard drive, other than rewriting the Registry.

  1. With Windows 95 or Windows 98 running on the system, insert the Toshiba Recovery and Applications CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  2. A screen will appear with three options. The third option is Toshiba Configuration Builder. Choosing this option in combination with the option for "Use Existing Partitions" should allow the reinstall of Windows and selected programs without reformatting the hard drive.
  3. Next the system will ask for a floppy disk with which it will create a boot disk for custom install.
  4. After making this disk, machine will reboot and prompt to run recovery.
  5. The message states that the contents of the hard drive will be erased. However, since the "Use existing partitions" was previously chosen, the hard drive will not be erased.

Note: Though the hard drive will not be reformatted with the above method, the Windows registry is rewritten. Consequently, programs that have been installed will need to be reinstalled in order to work. However, program files and data files will stay on hard disk and not be erased. Rewriting the Windows registry corrects registry errors.
