Issue
Recovery necessary on a Portege 3XXX series unit.
Procedure
  1. Exit to MS-DOS Mode or restart and choose command prompt from the Windows startup menu (F8). (Write protect the recovery diskette)
    1. Insert the recovery diskette, type set path=c:\windows\command and press the ENTER key.
    2. Type C: and press the ENTER key
    3. Type CD \windows\command and press the ENTER key.
    4. Type DISKCOPY A: A: and press the ENTER key. (When asked for the target diskette, insert a blank formatted floppy diskette) (When the process is complete answer the questions with an N and remove the disk)
  2. Insert the manufacturer's CD-ROM driver diskette.
    1. Type a: and press the ENTER key.
    2. Type dir *.sys and press the ENTER key. (This will require knowing which driver is the manufacturer's for CD-ROM access)
EXAMPLE:
    1. XYZ is substituted as an example for being the 3rd party manufacturer's CD-ROM driver.
    2. Backpack uses BPCDDRV.SYS as their CD-ROM driver.
    3. Panasonic uses KMECD.SYS as their CD-ROM driver.
    4. Port uses a point enabler, which is a file ending in .exe rather than .sys (see step 6-e for an example).
  1. Type COPY XYZ.sys C: and press the ENTER key
  2. Insert the copy of the recovery diskette (the created target disk from step #1)
  3. Type COPY C:XYZ.sys a:\micro
  4. Type EDIT CONFIG.SYS and press the ENTER key
    1. Change the "devicehigh=a:\micro\arccdena.sys" line to load the manufacturer's driver.
    2. For the XYZ CD-ROM load the line should read: device=a:\micro\XYZ.sys /d:arccd01 (XYZ being the driver's filename located in step #2)
    3. The Backpack CD-ROM load would be: device=a:\micro\bpcddrv.sys /d:arccd01
    4. The Panasonic CD-ROM load is: device=a:\micro\kmecd.sys /d:arccd01
    5. The Port CD-ROM load will be: device=a:\micro\cardport.exe /p:340 /d:arccd01
  5. Close and save the changes to the config.sys (Press ALT, then F, X and Y in successive order).
  6. Reboot the computer (press CTRL-ALT-DEL simultaneously or the reset button).
Note: The recovery floppy does not contain the EDIT command so this document assumes the hard drive has the Windows directory intact. If the drive is blank (formatted) a companion diskette (or Windows startup diskette) is needed. Copy the file "edit.exe" from the floppy to the hard drive.
