
Memory Parity Error Detected, System Halted after installing Windows 98 SE

- The error message "memory parity error detected. System halted" occurs when booting after installing Windows 98 Special Edition.
- Procedure
- Boot into safe mode (hold down CTRL while booting and choose Safe Mode from the startup menu)
- Open the control panel (Start/Settings/Control Panel from the taskbar) and double-click the DISPLAY applet.
- Highlight the Settings tab at the top of the Display Properties window.
- Click on the Advanced button.
- Select the Adapter tab.
- Click Change.
- Choose Next at the "Update Device Driver Wizard".
- Select "Display a list of all the devices in a specific location..."
- Click Next.
- Choose "Show All Devices".
- Select (Standard Display Types) as the manufacturer.
- Choose STANDARD DISPLAY ADAPTER (VGA).
- Click Next several times until "Finish" is applicable, select it.
- Close/Apply any open windows. Reboot when prompted. The system should reboot into normal Windows.
- Download and install the latest display drivers for the ATI Rage video adapter. The drivers should be available from ATI's website (http://www.atitech.com.)
