Issue
To set the screen brightness in Windows 98 to Bright or Super Bright, you will need to ensure the latest ACPI BIOS is installed, that the BIOS settings are correct, and that the Toshiba Utilities for Windows 98 have been installed.
Procedure
  1. To Update the drivers and BIOS

Please check the Toshiba Web Site at http://pcsupport.toshiba.com for the latest drivers for the computer. Make sure that you have the most recent versions of "ACPI flash BIOS" and "Toshiba Windows 98 Utilities".

  2. To check the power management settings in BIOS:
    1. With the unit off, hold down the ESC key while turning unit on. Continue to hold the key until the message "Check System, Press F1" is displayed.
    2. Release the ESC key, and press F1.
    3. In the upper right-hand corner is the current BIOS version. This should be the latest version for the unit. (See section A)
    4. Look at the "Battery Save Mode" entry.
    5. - If this is set to "Full Power", press the End key, then 'Y' to save and exit. Allow unit to boot normally. Proceed to section C.
    6. - If this is set to Low Power or User / Custom Settings, continue to next step.
    7. Highlight the Battery Save Mode entry using the arrow keys. This will open a menu.
    8. To change the Mode, slowly press the space bar to select Full Power. Then press the End key, then Y to save and exit. Allow unit to boot.

  3. To check Power Management and Toshiba Utilities settings in Windows 98:
    1. Boot the unit into Windows 98.
    2. Click Start - Settings - Control Panel.
    3. Double-click the Power Management icon.
    4. Check the Power Scheme setting. Adjust the entry to Portable/Laptop by clicking on the down arrow to the right, then clicking on this entry.
    5. Click the Toshiba tab.
    6. Checkmark the box for "Show Toshiba Power Icon."
    7. Click the Advanced button.
    8. Checkmark the box for "Open Time Remaining meter on Startup."
    9. Click OK, then click the Apply button. You should see immediate results.
    10. Click OK to close this screen, then close Control Panel.
