Issue

When the computer is turned on, this error message appears:

"Selectable bay lock key is unlocked. Please power off the machine
and lock the selectable bay lock key then power on."

The computer halts, instead of starting Windows.

Resolution

The Selectable Bay is the part of the computer that can contain a CD/DVD drive, hard disk drive, or diskette drive (depending upon the model of computer). The error message above generally indicates that the Selectable Bay is unlocked, though this may not be obvious. The Selectable Bay must be locked in order for the computer to start normally.

Adjacent to the Selectable Bay is a locking mechanism, in the form of a slider which can be set in either of two positions: next to an icon (embossed in the case) depicting a closed padlock, or next to an icon depicting an open padlock.

  • Try locking the bay again, by moving the lock slider all the way toward the closed-padlock icon.

  • Try unlocking the Selectable Bay, removing the drive from the bay, and reinserting the drive into the bay. Make sure that the drive is fully seated in the bay, then try locking the bay again. Make sure to push the lock slider all the way to the locked position.

  • Make sure not to confuse the Selectable Bay lock slider with the similar-looking battery lock slider. For simplicity's sake, make sure all lock sliders on the bottom and sides of the computer are in their locked positions.
