- Issue
- How are the serial port properties such as Baud Rate, Parity, etc. adjusted for serial devices?
- Resolution
- Specify the communications settings for each serial port on the system by using the Ports options. Port settings can be accessed by clicking Start/Settings/Control Panel/System applet in both Windows 95 and Windows 98. The settings specify how information is transferred between the computer and a device such as a modem, a serial-port adapter, a fax card, a printer, etc.
Note: Most communications applications that you will use to exchange information between computers including those in Windows require that you specify port settings within the specific application. These settings override the settings you specify using the Ports Properties.
For instance: with Windows 95 and Windows 98, the modem port settings are separate for each designated modem and can be set through the Modem applet by clicking Start/Settings/Control Panel. If you were to use a serial printer, the standard Port options for the COM port are also accessed through the Start/Settings/Printers (right click a printer icon and then) click Properties/Detail/Port Settings under the Printer Tab.
