Advanced Technology Attachment (not to be confused with the PC Card ATA drive) is basically the interface between the Hard Drive and the computer.
ATA-4 drives were designed to be backward compatible with the ATA-3 controllers.
Although you should have no problems installing an ATA-4 drive in place of an ATA-3 drive, the computer because of it's ATA-3 interface may not be able to take advantage of the interface enhancements related to the enhancements related to the ATA-4 interface on the hard drive.
Note: Information related to the actual differences between ATA-3 and ATA-4 seem to suggest the changes were related to both the addition of support for ATAPI (Advanced Information Attachment Packet Interface) CD-ROM drives and tape drives as well as to performance.

ATA is the "official" name that the ANSI group X3T10 used for what the computer industry calls IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics).
ATA-2 or EIDE (Enhanced IDE) was adopted as a standard by ANSI in 1994 and is called Advanced Technology Attachment-2 (it's also referred to as "Fast ATA"). ATA-2 provides for faster data rates, 32-bit transactions and (in some drives) DMA. Optional support for power saving modes and removable devices is also in the standard.
ATA-3 added further capabilities related mostly to speed.
ATA-4 sometimes called ultra DMA added ATAPI (Advanced Technology Attachment Packet Interface) capability to the ATA interface. A development of the Advanced Technology Attachment specifications which gives nearly twice the maximum transfer speed of the ATA-3 standard (PIO Mode 4).
