- This document discusses three methods for installing Windows 95 on Toshiba Computers. These included using the Microsoft Create System Disk program, using the various Pre-install (originally installed) CDs or by using a retail copy of Windows 95. BEFORE YOU START: Toshiba recommends that you have copy of the Windows 95 CD at hand before attempting to reinstall Windows 95. Toshiba also recommends that you have a copy of the Toshiba Utilities, which is available for downloading from the Toshiba Website at http://pcsupport.toshiba.com.
- Procedure
Method 1 - Microsoft Create System Disk Utility
The method uses the diskettes created using the Microsoft Create System Disk Utility. Note: This applies to the following models: Libretto 50, Satellite 100, 105, 110, 115; Satellite Pro 400, 405, 410, 415, 420, 425; Portege 300, 610, 620, 650, 660; Tecra 500, 510, 700, 710, 720, 730, 740; Performance Models T2110, T2115, T2130, T2135, T2155.
Utilities and other bundled programs: If you use this method and wish to restore your computer to a factory configuration you will also need to run either your Master Disk Creator (WINMDC - Toshiba's bundled program diskette creator) or use your Toshiba Backup CD if available.
Using the Microsoft Create System Disk
If you chose not to create the Windows 95 diskettes when you turned your Toshiba computer on the first time, you will be able to use the Create System Disk utility to create the Windows 95 installation diskettes. Microsoft's Create System Disks program requires you to make all of the Microsoft Windows 95 diskettes at one time. You need to have at least 32 new, formatted high-density diskettes available before you start the program. Label the diskettes using the pre-printed Microsoft Windows 95 diskette labels provided with your computer.
Make a Create Systems Disk backup
If you have a backup utility, Zip Drive, etc. it is recommended you make a backup of the C:\Windows\Options> before running Create System Diskettes. This is precautionary in case you have a problem during the creation of the diskettes.
- Right Click Start and click Explore.
- Below the C drive icon, click the plus sign next to Windows.
- Click time on the Options folder icon to highlight it.
- Click time on the "edit" pull down menu, and select "copy".
- Scroll up and click time on the C drive icon to highlight it.
- Click time on the "edit" pull down menu, and select "paste".
You should now have a copy of the C:\Windows\Options folder located at C:\Options.
Running Create System Disks
- Make sure the diskette drive is currently connected to the computer.
- To start the Create System Disk program either click the Create System Disk icon on the desktop or click Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Create System Disks.
Note: If neither one of these options is available look for the mscsd.exe on your system and launch the program by executing this file. Windows 95 will open the Create System Disks program. Follow the instructions on the screen to create the program diskettes.
Don't Lose Your Diskettes
You can only run the Create System Disks one time. DO NOT LOSE your diskettes once you have created them.

Method 2 - Recovery, Restore, Reconfiguration or Configuration Builder CDs
Toshiba has used several different names for the
CD-ROM packages that are used to restore the factory configuration on its computers. These CDs either shipped with a bootable floppy disk or the CDs themselves were bootable. Toshiba models which shipped with these packages include the: Libretto 70, 100, Satellite 2xx, 3xx, 400x, 401x, 402x, Satellite Pro 43x, 44x, 46x, 470, 480, 490, Portege 3010, 302x, 70xx, Tecra 520, 530, 550, 750, 780, 8000Utilities and other bundled programs: Toshiba bundled programs were also available either on a Backup CD, an Applications CD, a Recovery/Applications CD or the Configuration Builder CD depending again on your computer model
CAUTION: IF THIS PROCEDURE IS USED, THE ENTIRE CONTENTS OF THE HARD DISK WILL BE ERASED.
Bootable Floppy w/CD Mode
If your Recovery, Restore, Reconfiguration, Configuration Builder CD came with a bootable floppy diskette you can use this method to reconfigure your computer to the way it came from the factory.
Follow these steps
- Remove any device you may have added to your computer after purchase. This includes PCMCIA devices, external mice, printer. It is best to insure the computer is just the way it came out of the box. Memory can be the exception. NOTE: If you are unable to run your reconfiguration CD for any reason, contact your nearest ASP.
- Write enable the Recovery Boot diskette.
- Insert the diskette into drive A:\
- Insert the Recovery CD into the
CD-ROM drive - Restart the computer
- At the introduction screen press F1 to continue
- At the "Warning screen, All contents of the hard disk drive will be erased" press C to Continue.
The hard drive will be partitioned and formatted and the program files will be copied to the Hard Disk Drive. When completed you will have to shut down the computer, remove the floppy diskette and then power the computer back up.
Windows reinstall
- When prompted by Windows enter User information, accept the License Agreement and enter the Certificate of Authenticity number. (COA.) TIP: Don't install a Printer or any other optional device during the initial reconfiguration setup even if you will be using the device during normal operation. This prevents device drivers from inadvertently writing to system files such as the SYSTEM.INI, CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files. You can always install a device after the system has fully installed and is operating.
Bootable CD Mode
Toshiba has provided bootable CDs with many of its units. These bootable CDs with names like Restore, Recover , Reconfiguration, Configuration Builder allow the user to do a hands-off reset of a Toshiba computer back to its original, new, out of the box state. This procedure includes resetting the original BIOS options, Partitioning, Formatting and the automatic installation of all bundled software packages including the operating system and/or Windows.
Booting from the CD
Here are two procedures which let you boot from the
CD-ROM drive, using a bootable CD.- Hold down the "C" key while powering on the computer. This is the simplest of the two procedures, but because it is dependent on other factors, it may not be functional at times.
- Access the Toshiba CMOS/BIOS (TSETUP) hardware setup and change the Boot Priority option to
CD-ROM >FDD>HDD
Steps for changing the boot priority.
You can access the CMOS/BIOS System Setting screen using one of the following methods and the availability of the option on your computer model
- Press the escape (ESC) key while powering on the computer. The system prompt to "Check system press F1." Pressing the F1 key will activate the System Setup (BIOS).
- Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode and type C:\DOS\TSETUP
- Boot from the Companion disk and choose "Setup your Computer" from the menu. Go to Start>Programs>Toshiba Utilities>Toshiba Hardware
- Within System Setup find the Boot Priority Field and change the choice to following:
- Boot Priority =
CD-ROM > FDD > HDD (Remember that the default setting for Boot Priority is FDD > HDD >CD-ROM - Press the END key to save the changes and exit. The computer will attempt to reboot from the
CD-ROM drive first. If there is no CD in the CD Rom drive it will then attempt to boot normally which is FDD > HDD - Insert the Bootable CD and restart the computer. Follow the instructions to complete the Recovery process.
- When completed you will be prompted to restart the computer and you will then complete the Windows reinstall and software setup.

Warning: Read this before using an operating system or software package that was not bundled specifically with your Toshiba computer model from the factory. You should check your Toshiba Warranty Program policies as well as any information and warranties that may apply to that non-Toshiba software.
Method 3 - Retail Copy purchased from a store (Windows 95 is no longer available)
This method discusses using a retail copy of Windows 95 and the reasons you might want to use a retail copy of Windows 95:
- If you have a unit that is no longer in warranty.
- You do not want to use all of the programs Toshiba originally provided with the unit.
- You would like to have access to the additional programs and resources available with a retail copy of Windows 95 that were not available with OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) copies of Windows 95.
- Miscellaneous Files that may be needed to complete a Windows 95 on a Toshiba computer.
- BIOS files Windows 95 provides plug-n-play options that require a BIOS capable of PnP.
- Hardware/device drivers (video, audio, modem, etc.) Certain hardware devices on Toshiba computers require specific Windows 95 PnP drivers.
- Utility programs (Fn-Esse, Hardware Setup, Maxtime, TAP, etc) Toshiba Notebook and Desktop computers required the use of certain utility programs to be able to access and use specific Toshiba features such as the FN Keys, battery save functions, CMOS/BIOS setup tools, etc.
- Export Control and EULA
- Use of any software made available for download from this system constitutes your acceptance of the Export Control Terms and the terms in the Dynabook end-user license agreement both of which you can view before downloading any such software.
