How does the cooling fan work?
Procedure

The CPU fan provides extra cooling when necessary to help keep the computer's Pentium processor or central processing unit from overheating. The fan allows the processor to continue performing at its maximum speed. To prevent possible overheating of the Pentium processor or CPU, make sure not to block the fan vent.

Cooling Mode
When the computer's CPU (central processing unit) starts to overheat, the CPU fan will turn on to provide additional cooling to the CPU. The next few paragraphs explain the Cooling Method options and how you can access the options and customize them for your own use.
Performance - Default For Full Power or AC mode
Cools the system first by using the CPU fan, then by reducing the processing speed(if necessary). If the fan turns on frequently, you may want to set this option to Quiet to conserve battery life.

NOTE: If the system remains becomes too hot, the system will turn on Resume Mode and shut down automatically.

Quiet - Default for Low power or battery mode

Cools the system by temporarily reducing the processing speed, then by using the CPU fan(if necessary).

NOTE: If the system remains becomes too hot, the system will turn on Resume Mode and shut down automatically.

How to adjust the Cooling Mode properties: CMOS/BIOS or System Settings

Toshiba Notebook computers have a Systems Setting Screen that allow for adjustment or change various options. To access CMOS/BIOS will need access to the System Settings screen:
  1. Hold down the ESC key, during power-on (startup)
  2. Press the F1 key when prompted.
  3. Move the highlighter to the Battery Save Mode Field.
  4. If available there will be an option field where you can adjust the Cooling Method.

NOTE: Many Toshiba Models also have specialized Windows 95/98/NT programs that let you set the Battery Save options from inside windows. To find out more about the Battery Save options such as Cooling Method you should consult the User's Guide for your particular Toshiba computer.

ALSO NOTE: On some Toshiba models with a removable CD-ROM drive, if the CD-ROM drive is kept inside the SelectBay, you may notice the fan stays on most or all of the time. This occurs because the fan is regulated by an internal temperature gauge and when the CD-ROM drive is in the Selectbay it causes a bit more heat to be generated.

To force fan to turn off, power down the computer, remove the CD-ROM and replace it with the floppy drive, then power the system back on.
