Issue
Problems may be experienced when connecting to RAS (Remote Access Server) servers using the internal 56K modem on Tecra 8000, 780, 750, 550 or Portege 7000, 7010, 7020 under Windows 95/98 or Windows NT. This problem only occurs when trying to connect to RAS. The system works fine when connecting to commercial ISP or BBS such as Toshiba bulletin board service (949-837-4408.)
Procedure

There are three possible solutions to this problem.

1. Upgrade to V.90 modem driver

2. Add S38=0 String to disable K56Flex protocol

3. Downgrade modem driver to V2.16.

Upgrade to V.90 modem driver for Windows NT users

1. Download V.90 modem driver (V90_NT4.EXE) from Toshiba Service and Support website Tecra 8000 file download section.

2. Boot into Windows NT. Go to Control Panel/Ports. Delete COM2 (assuming modem was previously configured for COM2).

3. Go to Control Panel/Modem. Delete "Toshiba int. 56K modem".

4. Do not restart the machine. Double click on "V90_NT4.EXE" to begin installing V.90 modem driver. After installation is completed, restart NT.

5. It may become necessary to reinstall Dial up network configuration because Dial up adapter has changed from Int. 56K modem to Int. V.90 modem driver.

Upgrade to V.90 modem driver for Windows 95/98 users

1. Download V.90 modem driver (V90_ 56K.EXE) from Toshiba Service and Support website Tecra 8000 file download section.

2. Double click on "V90_56K.EXE" to begin installing V.90 modem driver. After installation is completed, restart Windows 95/98.

3. It may become necessary to reinstall Dial up network configuration because Dial up adapter has changed from Int. 56K modem to Int. V.90 modem driver.

Add S38=0 string to disable K56 flex protocol for Windows NT/95/98 users

1. Go to Control Panel/Modem/Properties/Connection/Advanced.

2. Add S38=0 in the Extra Settings box. Click OK to finish.

3. Reboot Windows 95/98 for change to take effect.

Comments: Disabling K56Flex protocol will reduce the time required to establish a handshake between the modems. In some cases, excessive handshaking cause RAS connection to be terminated by remote servers.

Downgrade modem driver to V2.16 for Windows NT/95/98 users

If V.90 modem driver and S38 string does not work, try changing modem driver to V2.16. This driver has been reported to work successfully with many RAS servers.

For Windows NT users, download 780MDMNT.EXE from Tecra 780 file download section.

For Windows 95/98 users, download 750DMDM.EXE from Tecra 750CDM/DVD download section. Follow readme file for installation instruction.
