UPGRADING ACPI-EQUIPPED TOSHIBA NOTEBOOKS FROM WINDOWS 95 TO WINDOWS 98
This document applies to the following Toshiba portable computers:
Libretto 100CT
Portege 320CT, 7000, 7010
Satellite 305CDS, 310/315, 320/325, 330/335, 2505, 4000, 4010
Satellite Pro 490CDT/490XCDT
Tecra 750CDT/CDM/DVD, 780CDM/DVD, 8000
In order to perform a successful upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows 98 on these models, the following
key points must be observed BEFORE beginning the Windows 98 installation
1. Install the ACPI BIOS upgrade
This is very important. Doing so prior to installing Windows 98 will save you time and aggravation.
**NOT applicable to Portege 70x0, Tecra 8000, Satellite 40x0. ACPI Bios is preinstalled out of box
2. Remove the Toshiba Windows 95 PCI Infrared Driver if you have it installed.
3. Uninstall the Toshiba Windows 95 Utilities using the specific uninstaller for your model (available for
download from http://pcsupport.toshiba.com)
**ONLY applicable to Portege 70x0, Satellite 40x0, Tecra 8000.
4. Install Windows 98 Upgrade.
RETROFITTING ACPI BIOS AFTER WINDOWS 98 IS INSTALLED
This portion of the document ONLY applies if you have installed Windows 98 without having the ACPI BIOS
already installed on your system.
Toshiba recommends installing the ACPI BIOS prior to upgrading or installing Windows 98. If this is not
possible, the following procedure will allow you to update your Windows 98 installation for ACPI functionality.
The short list of procedures is presented below, followed by detailed instructions. To successfully complete
this process, you'll need to download APMACP98.EXE from Toshiba's Services and Support Website. The
direct download URL to this file is http://www.csd.toshiba.com/tais/csd/support/files/download/apmacp98.exe
1. Download APMACP98.EXE from Toshiba's Online Services, and make certain to copy it to your Windows 98
machine
2. Shutdown the system install the ACPI BIOS
3. Reboot to Windows 98
4. From Windows 98 Explorer, double-click on the icon for the APMACP98.EXE file that you downloaded.
5. *After Windows 98 restarts, copy the SERWAVE.VXD file from the \UNIMODEM\ folder on the
Applications CD-ROM to the \Windows\System\folder. On some systems, this file may be hidden,
so you can use Windows 98's "Find" function to locate the file.
*Steps marked with an asterisk only apply to models equipped with
internal modems. These steps do NOT apply to models that use a
PCMCIA modem
DETAILS:
1. Download APMACP98.EXE from Toshiba's Online Services, and make certain to copy it to your Windows 98
machine
2. Install the ACPI BIOS using one of the methods described in the BIOS installation instructions
(README.TXT).
3. Restart your computer and allow Windows 98 to load normally
4. From Windows 98 Explorer, double-click on the icon for the APMACP98.EXE file that you downloaded. This
will cause Windows 98 to scan for new hardware (ACPI).
This process will require several reboots, and will find many "new" hardware devices, installing drivers for
each. If Windows prompts you with questions about unknown devices, just press Enter through the prompts.
You can install drivers for these items later. Drivers for some "Unknown Devices" will be provided in the
Toshiba Windows 98 Utilities for your machine. When this process is complete, proceed to step 5.
5. Windows 98 insists on installing its own version of the "Wave device for voice modem". This driver is
likely to cause your internal modem-equipped Toshiba notebook to lock up when Windows restarts, or
will cause problems (lockups) when using the modem. The simple fix for this is to rename the existing
version of \Windows\System\SERWAVE.VXD to SERWAVE.W98 and then copy the SERWAVE.VXD
file from the \UNIMODEM\folder on the Applications CD-ROM to the \Windows\System\ folder. You
can do this from Windows 98 Explorer (in "Safe Mode" if your system hangs up on restart), or from the
command prompt. It might be a good idea to copy this file to a diskette if you need to apply the fix from
Safe Mode, since Safe Mode doesn't provide CD-ROM support.
