Q1. Where can I get Windows 95/98 and NT 4.0 installation files?

A1. You can download the latest installation files from the following forums:

Internet: http://www.xircom.com
ftp://ftp.xircom.com

Xircom BBS: 805.376.9130 (up to 33.6Kbps)
805.375.5280 (up to 56Kbps)

At the Xircom Website choose Downloads then click Modem. Under modem click on the link "CreditCard
Modem 56T (CM56T)". On the resulting page select the file name "CM56TINS.EXE." Your browser will
prompt for the location on your hard drive in which to download the file. This is a self-extracting archive file
and is expanded by typing the file name (at the appropriate prompt) or by double-clicking the file name in
Windows Explorer.

To expand the file to a floppy disk insert a blank formatted floppy disk in the floppy drive and type CM56TINS
A:\ /Y and press Enter. This will create an installation disk for your modem.

From the Xircom BBS Main Menu page:
Type D (for download) and press Enter,
Type F (for file) and press Enter
Type the file name CM56TINS.EXE and press Enter, press Enter again.
Type C for Continue and press Enter
Select Z modem as the method of download.
When done exit the BBS and expand the file as described above.

Q2. Does my modem have voice capability?

A2. No. The CM-56T provides support for data and fax communication protocols
only.

Q3. My modem is installed on COM5. How do I change it to another port?

A3. From Control Panel open the System icon and select the Device Manager Tab. Under Modem select
the Xircom CreditCard Modem 56T entry, click Properties and select the Resource tab. Remove the check
from the "Use Automatic Settings" check box.

Make a note the Interrupt Request being used by the modem. If the Interrupt Request value is 3, then change
the basic configuration until the Input/Output range 02F8-02FF is displayed. This will most likely be Basic
Configuration 0006. Click OK and then click YES to confirm the action. Once Windows has completed
processing this change the modem should be using COM2. Selecting a Basic Configuration where the
Input/Output address is 03E8-03EF will result in COM3 being selected for the modem. Use this selection
if the Interrupt Request is something other than 3.

Q4. How can I tell what port my modem is set for? AOL says it cannot open the selected COM Port.

A4. Double-click the Modem icon in the Control Panel. You should see a "Xircom CreditCard Modem 56T"
in Installed Modems list. Select the Diagnostics tab. The installed COM ports are displayed along with any
associated modem. Use the COM port associated with The Xircom CreditCard Modem 56T for AOL.

Q5. Where Can I get the AOL script file for this Modem?

A5. Download and extract the installation files as described in question 1. In the resulting Scripts file
directory you will find the files CLASS73.MDM and MODEM.INI. Copy these files to your hard drive as
described in question 6.

Q6. What modem should I select in AOL?

A6. First update the CLASS73.MDM and the MODEM.INI files. In the C:\AOL30\MPM directory, rename
CLASS73.MDM file to CLASS73.OLD using the command "REN CLASS73.MDM CLASS73.OLD" or in
Windows Explorer right click the file and select rename. Type the new name (CLASS73.OLD) and press
Enter. Perform the same steps for MODEM.INI changing its name to MODEM.OLD. Copy the
CLASS73.MDM and MODEM.INI files from the Scripts directory of the installation disk to the
C:\AOL30\MPM directory. Then start the America Online program.

To setup your Xircom product, click SETUP at the Welcome screen. Click Modem Setup in the Network &
Modem Setup window. In the Modem Selection and Customization window select the COM # that is assigned
to the Xircom modem under Modem Port. Select Xircom CreditCard Modems, then click OK.

Note: Use the default initialization string. If you need to change the string you may do so under the Edit
Commands option.

Q7. My modem dials to AOL, but why does it fail to connect to the Toll Free
(800) number?

A7. To setup your Xircom modem in AOL, go to the AOL Welcome screen click Modem Setup in the Network
& Modem Setup window. In the Modem Selection and Customization window, select the COM # that is
assigned to the Xircom modem (as noted under the Modem icon in the Control Panel). Select Xircom
CreditCard Modem, then click OK. Follow question 9 to ensure your are using the latest firmware revision.
Follow question 5 and 6 instructions to ensure you are using the correct script file.

Q8. I unpacked my laptop and I do not have a modem cable. How do I get one?

A8. The Xircom CM-56T uses a cable called a dongle to provide the interface between the modem and
the telephone cord. This cable comes in two types:
A small gray cable that connects directly to the adapter and has a female RJ-11 connection at the other end.

OR

A long 6' black cable that connects directly to the adapter and has a male RJ-11 at the other end that will
plug directly to your wall outlet.

If this is missing from your Laptop package you will need to contact Toshiba. They have provided a phone
number to their fulfillment department as part of their documentation. You must contact Toshiba within 30
days of purchase to obtain any missing parts.

Q9. How do I check and update my modem firmware?

A9. Go to START/Programs/Accessories/Hyperterminal. Double click the icon marked Hypertrm
(or Hypertrm.exe). Type "Test" in the Name: box and press OK. You are now able to select the Xircom
CreditCard Modem 56T, if it is not already selected. Enter 12345 in the phone number box and click OK.
In the "Connect To" window click Cancel. The Terminal screen (white screen) appears, type ATI3 and
press ENTER. The modem should respond with its Identification string and a revision number. This revision
should be 1.49 or greater. If it is not you will need to update your modem firmware.

To update the modem firmware, download the latest upgrade files from http://www.xircom.com. At this URL
select Downloads, select Modems and click on the link "CreditCard Modem 56T (CM56T)." On the resulting
page click on the file name "CM56TUPG.EXE." Your browser will ask for a location on your hard drive in
which to download the file. Copy the file to an empty directory (you may want to create a directory on your
c: drive named flash), open Windows Explorer and double-click the file. CM56TUPG.EXE expands to provide the flash utility, a .PAK
file and a README.TXT file. Instructions for running the firmware upgrade are contained in the README.TXT file.

Q10. If I have a problem with my modem should I call Toshiba or
Xircom?

A10. You may call either company for support on your modem. Toshiba customer support can be reached
at (800)999-4273. Xircom Customer Support can be reached at (805)376-9200.

Q11. If I call for support and the modem needs to be replaced who will replace it, Toshiba or Xircom?

A11. Xircom is responsible for replacement when a technician has determined it to be necessary.

Q12. Does the Xircom CM-56T modem support cellular phones?

A12. The CM-56T modem does not work with any type of cellular or GSM phone.

Q13. Does this modem have international support?

A13. The CM-56T modem has been designed for use in the US and Canada. It may function in other
countries as well, but it was not designed for this purpose, and such use is not supported.

Q14. Why do I have two ports for cable connections and which one should I use?

A14. The current released version of the CM-56T carries two connector openings. This is to provide support
for the Xircom MiniDock connector which provides a pass through port for your telephone receiver. The
MiniDock is sold separately. (Future versions may not support the MiniDock and will have only one connection in the center). Orient the adapter so that the Xircom label
is facing up and you are looking at the connector end. The opening on the right is for the modem dongle.

Q15. How do I get my CM-56T to work with Phoenix Card Executive?

A15. If using Phoenix Card Executive 4.0, under Windows NT, it will be necessary to uninstall the Phoenix
software before installing the Xircom adapter. For specific instructions on removal and reinstallation of
Phoenix Card services please seek technical assistance from you laptop manufacturer.
