Information
WARNING: The procedure you are about to follow to fix your stated problem involves editing the system Registry files. Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems which may cause the loss of data, and may require you to reinstall Windows 95. Neither Toshiba nor Microsoft will guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the Changing Keys And Values online Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe). Note that you should make a backup copy of the registry files before you edit the registry.

To create an icon on your desktop that will restore the registry to the most recently saved version, do the following:

1. Go to the Start Menu / Run command
2. Type "regedit /e restore.reg" (where restore can be any filename)

Double-clicking on the desktop icon will restore the registry.

At times the registry may become so corrupted that it is best to remove it. The
following procedure will remove the registry files so that a reload of Windows 95
will create a "fresh" registry.

Note: This procedure is very close to the example "Restoring the registry" found in the
customer's booklet "Microsoft Windows 95" - the white booklet with the Certificate of
Authenticity on the front cover. Page 83.

To remove the corrupted registry

1. Start or restart your computer. After your computer starts, Windows displays the
following text:

Starting Windows 95...

2. While the text is on your screen, press and release the F8 key. A menu appears.

3. Choose the Command Prompt Only option.

4. At the command prompt, change to your Windows directory. For example, if your
Windows directory is C:\Windows, you would type the following:

CD\WINDOWS

This should bring you to the C:\WINDOWS> prompt.

5. Type the following commands, press ENTER after each one.

ATTRIB -h -r -s SYSTEM.DAT
ATTRIB -h -r -s USER.DAT

6. If you wish to keep a backup of the current registry files, type the following
commands. Otherwise, skip to step 7.

COPY SYSTEM.DAT SYSTEM.WAS
COPY USER.DAT USER.WAS

7. Type the following commands to delete the registry files.

DELETE SYSTEM.DAT
DELETE USER.DAT

8. Now the old registry files are gone, reload Windows 95.
