
Configuring Canon BJC Series Printers to work using the Infrared Port

- Issue
- When trying to print using a Canon BJC series printer utilizing the Infrared ports on the printer and notebook, the notebook displays the following error. "Cannot Detect Cartridge Type" and then states that there is an error with the Printer connection.
- Procedure
- If Infrared support for Windows 95 is not already installed:
Download IRPCI95.EXE (version 1.0, 6-2-98) from the Toshiba Technical Service and Support web site. Follow the instructions listed in the Technote named "Configuring IrDA driver for Portables with PCI IrDA" posted on the Toshiba Web site.
If IrDA is already installed follow the procedure below:
This TechNote uses the Canon BJC50 printer as an example. Drivers for other printers in the family are available from CANON USA.
Download the printer driver "BJ395B.EXE" for the Canon BJC50 from:
- The CANON USA web site.
- Direct link as of January 1999
(This link may change; if so, use the more general CANON USA link.)
- Choose settings from the Start menu
- Choose Printers
- Double-click the "Add Printer" icon
- Click the "Next" button
- Select "Local Printer" then the "Next" button
- Click the "Have Disk" button
- Type "C:\BJDISK" then the "Okay" button
- Select "Canon BJC-50" then the "Next" button
- Select "Infrared Serial (COM) Connections Port" Then the "Next"
button.
(Do Not Select "Infrared Printing (LPT) Port") - The default printer name is "Canon BJC-50" select the "Finish" button
- It will then print a test page.
- In the Printers folder, right click the "Canon BJC-50" and select "Properties".
- Select the "Details" tile
- In the pull down menu labeled "Print to the following port" select "COMX: (Infrared Serial (COM) Connection Port)" Where "X" is the COM port number Ex. "COM4"
- Select the "Okay" button and then try and Print.
