- In order to use any CDs in DOS, a real-mode driver must be loaded at bootup. Follow the below procedure to create a shortcut to DOS in Windows 95 to activate the CD-ROM drive.
1. Find the file "DOSPRMPT.PIF" and drag it to your desktop.
To do this GO TO Start/Programs/Windows Explorer/Tools/Find files or folders if this file is not found,
try finding *.*PIF and look for a file type shortcut to MS-DOS and drag it to your desktop.
2. Right-click on the file to bring up PROPERTIES.
3. Click on PROGRAM, ADVANCED, and place checkmark next to MS-DOS mode.
4. Click on "Specify a new MS-DOS configuration".
5. In the box for CONFIG.SYS, type in the following in a new line as specified by model:
- for laptops:
devicehigh=c:\cddrv\toscdrom.sys /d:toscd001
- for desktops:
devicehigh=c:\cddrv\d011v109.sys /d:toscd001
6. In the box for AUTOEXEC.BAT, type in the following in a new line as specified by model:
- for laptops:
LH c:\windows\command\mscdex /d:toscd001 /l:d /m:10
- for desktops:
LH c:\windows\command\mscdex /d:toscd001 /l:e /m:12
7. Whenever the customer needs to go to DOS for his DOS games that require CD-ROM, simply double-click on the shortcut on the
desktop.
