- Information
- If the CD-ROM heading is not even seen in device manager in Windows 95, go through the regular troubleshooting and check the following: if there are two HDD controllers in device manager and one of them has a yellow exclamation mark on it, perform "chkdsk" from DOS. If "Total Bytes Memory" is anything less than 655,360, there is a monkey virus on the system. Then do the following:
Boot from a write-protected floppy disk with the same version of operating system that is on the hard drive. The disk should also contain FDISK.EXE and SYS.COM for this version of operating system. Run FDISK /MBR. When command prompt returns, run SYS C:. Power down system, wait at least 5 seconds and power up system. It should be noted that a product by Mcaffe, called Boot Shield, is not compatible with Windows '95 and could cause the symptoms listed above. Boot Shield is a program that loads from Master Boot Record prior to the Starting ...... message. If this program is loading, have the customer use the program's uninstall utility to remove it. Performing a second FDISK /MBR, SYS C:, and restarting system will remove Boot Shield.
Otherwise, advise the customer to purchase a virus protection software to check for other viruses. If no viruses are found, refer the customer to an Authorized Service Provider (ASP).
