- Solution:
- First determine which computer will be HOST and which will be GUEST. The host computer will have the resource that the guest needs.
- Install DCC on both computers by going to CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS, WINDOWS SETUP, COMMUNICATIONS, DIRECT CABLE CONNECTION. Make sure that DIAL-UP NETWORKING is also installed. Reboot if prompted.
- Plug in the cable onto both computers.
- From the HOST computer, enable File and Printer Sharing by going into NETWORK PROPERTIES, FILE AND PRINT SHARING, and placing checkmarks on both options. Reboot if prompted.
- Select files/folders on the host to be shared by the guest. Right-click on any file/folder/drive, and select SHARING. Then click on SHARED AS and select the proper options below that. You should see a hand holding the item you choose to share.
- Launch DCC on the HOST by going to START, ACCESSORIES, DIRECT CABLE CONNECTION. Select HOST and click on NEXT.
- Pick your connection port. If you are using a serial cable (9-pin female-to-female connection on newer laptops, 25-pin female-to-female connection on older ones), select SERIAL CABLE ON COMx, where x=1 or 2. If you are using a parallel cable (25-pin male-to-male connection), select PARALLEL CABLE ON LPT1. If you receive a message saying that 'DIAL-UP NETWORKING NEEDS TO BE CONFIGURED,' click on OK and re-run DCC after it is done.
- Pause at the LISTEN screen.
- Launch DCC on the GUEST computer. Select as GUEST and choose the proper port. As soon as you click on FINISH, click on LISTEN on the HOST computer.
- If everything is setup properly, a connection should be established at this moment.
- If prompted for 'Microsoft Network Username and Password,' just enter a name, leave the password blank and click on OK to bypass the password.
- Once you see a window containing shared resources on HOST coming up on GUEST, you may treat it as a regular window and use 'drag-and-drop' techniques to copy files. Notice that if you need to COPY an executable file (.EXE), you will need to right-click on it to go to COPY, and then right-click again at destination and go to PASTE. If you just drag and drop, it will create a
