Issue
Setting up 32 bit disk and file access under Windows for Workgroups 3.11
Procedure
If in Windows, exit Windows to a DOS prompt.

Re-boot the machine and hold down F5 when you see "Starting MS- DOS..."

Press ENTER a few times (even if you see a column of @ signs on the screen)

Type the following lines followed by ENTER:

ATTRIB -R -A -S -H 386SPART.PAR

DEL 386SPART.PAR

SCANDISK C: /AUTOFIX

Scandisk will report any difficulties it found. This makes

sure the disk media is OK. If SCANDISK completes with no

major errors, run DEFRAG next as described below:

DEFRAG C: /F

The three steps above delete the partition, test the disk for errors, and start the defragger, running it automatically.

When done, reboot the machine and let it continue normally. Start Windows if it does not automatically start.

You will receive a message "Corrupt Swap File Warning," Answer Yes to [sic] "Delete the corrupt swap file?"

From Program Manager, run Main/Control Panel/Enhanced, click Virtual Memory, you will get a dialog box saying "A corrupt permanent swap file was found on drive C:....Set corrupt file to zero length now?" answer Yes. Click Change, the dialog box expands. Put a checkmark in "Use 32-bit disk access" and "Use 32- bit file access." Copy the value from "Recommended size" to the "New Size" field. For example, if "Recommended size" is 27,632kb and "New Size" is 8095, type 27,632 in the "New Size" box. Click OK, click Yes, click Restart Windows.
