Issue
Configuring the Xircom CE2 Ethernet Card for Windows for Workgroups
Procedure
To configure the Xircom CE2 Ethernet Card for Windows for Workgroups, you should run the install program for the install program diskette, and follow the on-line instructions. You will have choices as to what network to install for, one of them being Windows For Workgroups.

Steps are as follows:

  1. run install from install diskette
  2. follow the instructions that the install program explains
  3. load WFW
  4. run Network install from the Network group
  5. select your adapter (unlisted)
  6. insert Xircom Drivers disk in drive and press enter
  7. you will have 3 choices
    NDIS2 Real Mode Driver
    NDIS3 Protected Mode Driver
    Novell Netware
  8. You should select NDIS3 for WFW
  9. Follow the instructions on screen
  10. Reboot the PC and start WFW.

One thing to remember this operation allows use of the Xircom CE2 card with Toshiba Card Manager, before installation the card should be left unconfigured. The NET START command that Windows for Workgroups adds to the AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE load the configuration from PROTOCOL.INI in the Windows directory. Once NET START loads the Xircom card will look configured to Toshiba Card Manager. To be able to see other WFW servers you should have about a minimum of 520k of conventional memory. Toshiba Card Manager and most ethernet adapters don't configure memory exclusions optimally. Card Manager uses C800-C8FF and the Xircom adapter excludes D000-D1FF. To set this up optimally, edit the PROTOCOL.INI and change the following line:

MemoryBaseAddress=0xD000

Change it to the following:

MemoryBaseAddress=0xC900

This will give you a larger block of unfragmented upper memory, so you will be able to free up conventional memory.
