- Issue
- Xircom CE-II-ps PCMCIA Ethernet adapter can cause system to hang at Windows 95 bootup splash screen if the fast IrDA driver C:\TRANXIT\PUMAFIR.386 is enabled in SYSTEM.INI file AND there is an RJ45 cable connecting the Xircom card to the network connection. If the Xircom card is plugged in but NOT connected to the network when first booting up, this problem does not occur. To duplicate this problem, make sure the test system is equipped with fast IrDA port (such as 510CDT) and then follow these steps:
- Procedure
- Boot up into factory preloaded Windows 95 on a 510CDT, theninsert a Xircom CE-II-ps PCMCIA ethernet card.
- Windows 95 PnP will autodetect the card and asking for driverdisk, insert driver disk and configure the card (make sure noresource conflict).
- After configuring the card, go to Control Panel/Network/Configuration,make sure that client for Netware network is shown in the componentlist and IPX/SPX compatible protocol is bound to Xircom card. Also make sure Primary Network Logon is "client for Netwarenetwork".
- Connect the Xircom card to a Novell Ethernet network nodewith an UTP RJ45 cable.
- Shut down the machine completely. Power back up and restartthe machine into Windows 95, system boots into the first splashscreen, blanks out, comes back to the second splash screen. Atthis point, an audio beep is heard indicating the Xircom cardis initialized. LED lights on the Xircom dongle flashes, systemfreezes up while still in the splash screen.
- Push reset button to restart the machine, hold down F8 whenbooting. Select command prompt from the bootup menu.Go to Windowsdirectory, edit SYSTEM.INI file by typing "EDITC:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM.INI."
- Go to [386Enh] section, remark out the TranXit fast IrDA driver."REM C:\TRANXIT\PUMAFIR.386"Save file, exit and restartWindows 95.
- While the Xircom card is still connected to the network, Windows95 will boot up properly this time and show network logon screen.
Note: This problem is also reported ( not confirmed ) with a Madge
