Issue
Configuration items for running Windows 3.x on a Toshiba T5100 laptop computer.
Procedure
The T5100 is included in the "Microsoft Windows Version 3.0 Hardware Compatibility List" which ships with each copy of Win3. Although Microsoft has certified the T5100 for use with Windows 3.0, Toshiba's PC Product Support department has identified a few problems that range from inconvenient to exasperating; depending on your Windows setup, application usage, and hardware configuration. This file describes the known problems and explains ways to work around them.

PARITY ERROR 2

PROBLEM: Exiting to DOS after running from a normal SETUP installation of Windows in 386-Enhanced mode will result in a PARITY ERROR 2 message and a system lockup. The T5100 must be rebooted at this point. This problem has been reported to Toshiba's R&D group for further research.

This can be solved by _either_ of the two following steps.

ACTION1: Edit the SYSTEM.INI file, inserting the following line anywhere under the [386ENH] heading:

EMMExclude=C000-EFFF

This will prevent the PARITY ERROR 2 from occurring and also prevents the related system lockup when exiting to DOS.

ACTION2: Edit the SYSTEM.INI file, inserting a semicolon (;) at the beginning of the line under the [386EHN] heading which reads:

device=*parity

...so that it is changed to:

;device=*parity

This will prevent the PARITY ERROR 2 from occurring and also prevents the related system lockup when exiting to DOS.

DISPLAY PROBLEMS

There are no video problems using an external EGA monitor connected to the T5100's RGB port when Windows 3.0 is setup with the "EGA" screen driver. If this is your configuration and you never plan on running Windows 3.x on the plasma display you can skip the rest of this section.

PROBLEM: When running in 386-Enhanced mode, the "Olivetti/AT&T" and "Compaq Portable Plasma" drivers will cause the system to hang.

ACTION: Use Standard or Real modes with these drivers, or use the EGA driver in 386-Enh mode.

PROBLEM: When using the EGA driver in 386-Enh mode, although a DOS application will load and run fine in full-screen mode, any second or following switch from the Windows graphical desktop to a full-screen DOS app will result in a garbled, completely unreadable display. Using the [Alt]+[Enter] command to switch the application to a window clears up the problem, but returning to the full-screen mode shows that the problem hasn't gone away.

ACTION #1: One option is to simply stay away from full-screen mode with DOS applications. Do do this, make sure the "window" box is checked in PifEdit. A DOS application running in a window will provide a virtualized 80-column by 25-line display whenever it is maximized by double-clicking on the window's title bar or by selecting "Maximize" from the window's "System Window".
