Crackling in the left speaker is addressed in Step 4 below.
Step 1: Enable sound hardware configuration in TSETUP
- Shut down the computer using Windows 95 Start/Shutdown/Shut down the computer from the task bar.
- After the system has powered down, hold down the ESC key while turning on the power. Ignore any beeps.
- Keep ESC down until you receive a message "Check System. Then press [F1] key."
- Press the F1 key, this displays the SETUP screen
- Press PGDN
- (If using a Tecra 500 or Tecra 510, skip to step 9 below)
- Press Down Arrow twice, highlight moves to the right of "Infrared"
- Press Spacebar until "Infrared = Not Used" appears
- Press Down Arrow until sound system parameters box appears
- Press Spacebar until "Sound = Enabled" appears
- Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to right of "WSS I/O Address"
- Press Spacebar to select 534H (534H, 608H, E84H, F44H)
- Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to right of "SBPro I/O Address"
- Press Spacebar to select 220H (220H, 240H)
- Press Down Arrow, highlight skips "Synthesizer I/O Address" and highlight moves to "WSS & SBPro IRQ Level"
- Press Spacebar to select IRQ9 (IRQ5, IRQ7, IRQ9, IRQ11, IRQ15)
- Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to "WSS & SBPro DMA Playback ="
- Press Spacebar to select Channel 0 (Channel 0, Channel 1, Channel 3)
- Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to "WSS & SBPro DMA Record ="
- Press Spacebar to select Channel 1 or Channel 3 (Channel 1, Channel 3, Same as Playback), Note: Playback and Record should be set to DIFFERENT CHANNEL NUMBERS
- Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to "Primary IDE"
- Press the END key
- Press "Y" answering Are you sure ? (Y/N)
- System will re-boot and detect the sound hardware
- Wait until the system has re-booted and the desktop has appeared
- Move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and right click on the Task Bar
- Choose Minimize All Windows
- Right click on the My Computer icon
- Click the Device Manager tab
- Click the + sign to the left of Sound, video and game controllers
- Click Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC
- Click Remove
- Click OK
- Click Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers
- Click Remove
- Click OK
- Click Close
- Click Start/Shut down/Restart the computer
- Wait until the system has re-booted and the desktop has appeared
- Set the audio levels for microphone and speaker with Start/Programs/Accessories/MultiMedia/Sound Recorder.
- On the Sound Recorder window click Edit/Audio Properties, set the playback and recording levels to midrange
- Set the input sources for playback and record to the Crystal audio drivers.
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager
- Click the + sign to the left of Sound, video and game controllers
- Click Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC
- Click Properties
- Click Resources
- Check that the sound system is set to IRQ9, I/O Addresses 220 and 388, DMA 0 & 1.
- If not, UNcheck Use automatic settings
- Click Interrupt Request
- Click Change Setting
- Set to 9
- If IRQ9 has a conflict, try another unused IRQ
- Click Input/Output Range
- Click Change Setting
- Set to 220
- Click Input/Output Range
- Click Change Setting
- Set to 388
- Click Direct Memory Access
- Click Change Setting
- Set to 0
- Click Direct Memory Access
- Click Change Setting
- Set to 1
- If you do not have the crystal audio driver disk, create it with Master Disk Creator
- When the crystal audio driver disk is made, place it in drive A:
- Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and click Install
- Continue with driver installation
- Reboot the system with Start/Shut down/Restart the computer after the crystal audio driver installation is complete
Step 2: Remove sound system from hardware profile
Step 3: Adjust volume for microphone and speaker
Step 4: If there is crackling in the left speaker
Step 5: If difficulties continue, re-install the sound drivers.
