Crackling in the left speaker is addressed in Step 4 below.

Step 1: Enable sound hardware configuration in TSETUP

  1. Shut down the computer using Windows 95 Start/Shutdown/Shut down the computer from the task bar.
  2. After the system has powered down, hold down the ESC key while turning on the power. Ignore any beeps.
  3. Keep ESC down until you receive a message "Check System. Then press [F1] key."
  4. Press the F1 key, this displays the SETUP screen
  5. Press PGDN
  6. (If using a Tecra 500 or Tecra 510, skip to step 9 below)
  7. Press Down Arrow twice, highlight moves to the right of "Infrared"
  8. Press Spacebar until "Infrared = Not Used" appears
  9. Press Down Arrow until sound system parameters box appears
  10. Press Spacebar until "Sound = Enabled" appears
  11. Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to right of "WSS I/O Address"
  12. Press Spacebar to select 534H (534H, 608H, E84H, F44H)
  13. Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to right of "SBPro I/O Address"
  14. Press Spacebar to select 220H (220H, 240H)
  15. Press Down Arrow, highlight skips "Synthesizer I/O Address" and highlight moves to "WSS & SBPro IRQ Level"
  16. Press Spacebar to select IRQ9 (IRQ5, IRQ7, IRQ9, IRQ11, IRQ15)
  17. Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to "WSS & SBPro DMA Playback ="
  18. Press Spacebar to select Channel 0 (Channel 0, Channel 1, Channel 3)
  19. Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to "WSS & SBPro DMA Record ="
  20. Press Spacebar to select Channel 1 or Channel 3 (Channel 1, Channel 3, Same as Playback), Note: Playback and Record should be set to DIFFERENT CHANNEL NUMBERS
  21. Press Down Arrow again, highlight moves to "Primary IDE"
  22. Press the END key
  23. Press "Y" answering Are you sure ? (Y/N)
  24. System will re-boot and detect the sound hardware
  25. Step 2: Remove sound system from hardware profile

  26. Wait until the system has re-booted and the desktop has appeared
  27. Move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and right click on the Task Bar
  28. Choose Minimize All Windows
  29. Right click on the My Computer icon
  30. Click the Device Manager tab
  31. Click the + sign to the left of Sound, video and game controllers
  32. Click Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC
  33. Click Remove
  34. Click OK
  35. Click Crystal PnP Audio System Control Registers
  36. Click Remove
  37. Click OK
  38. Click Close
  39. Click Start/Shut down/Restart the computer
  40. Step 3: Adjust volume for microphone and speaker

  41. Wait until the system has re-booted and the desktop has appeared
  42. Set the audio levels for microphone and speaker with Start/Programs/Accessories/MultiMedia/Sound Recorder.
  43. On the Sound Recorder window click Edit/Audio Properties, set the playback and recording levels to midrange
  44. Set the input sources for playback and record to the Crystal audio drivers.
  45. Step 4: If there is crackling in the left speaker

  46. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager
  47. Click the + sign to the left of Sound, video and game controllers
  48. Click Crystal PnP Audio System CODEC
  49. Click Properties
  50. Click Resources
  51. Check that the sound system is set to IRQ9, I/O Addresses 220 and 388, DMA 0 & 1.
  52. If not, UNcheck Use automatic settings
  53. Click Interrupt Request
  54. Click Change Setting
  55. Set to 9
  56. If IRQ9 has a conflict, try another unused IRQ
  57. Click Input/Output Range
  58. Click Change Setting
  59. Set to 220
  60. Click Input/Output Range
  61. Click Change Setting
  62. Set to 388
  63. Click Direct Memory Access
  64. Click Change Setting
  65. Set to 0
  66. Click Direct Memory Access
  67. Click Change Setting
  68. Set to 1
  69. Step 5: If difficulties continue, re-install the sound drivers.

    Create Crystal Audio Driver Disk and Install Sound Drivers

  70. If you do not have the crystal audio driver disk, create it with Master Disk Creator
  71. When the crystal audio driver disk is made, place it in drive A:
  72. Click Start/Settings/Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs and click Install
  73. Continue with driver installation
  74. Reboot the system with Start/Shut down/Restart the computer after the crystal audio driver installation is complete
