Issue
These steps will configure this combo card when the following have occurred:
  1. The Xircom card was configured by CardWorks instead of Windows 95.
  2. The Xircom card will not create the "Parent Device Key".
  3. The Xircom card comes up without a Parent Device, but gives two listings under the modems key with a conflict.
Procedure
This solution involves modifying the Windows registry. It is advisable to always make a backup of the registry files before modifying them. Make a copy of the SYSTEM.DAT and USER.DAT files. Warning: The computer may be unable to boot if Regedit is used incorrectly. Use this solution at your own risk.
  1. Remark any line in the CONFIG.SYS file related to CARDWORKS. Lines that should be remarked may be similar to the following example:
    rem SystemSoft CardWorks(TM)
    rem SystemSoft CardWorks(TM) PCMCIA drivers:
    devicehigh=C:\CARDWORK\SSTPIC95.EXE /SKT:2
    devicehigh=C:\CARDWORK\CS.EXE /POLL:1
    device=C:\CARDWORK\CSALLOC.EXE
    devicehigh=C:\CARDWORK\CARDID.EXE
  2. Run SYSEDIT and remark the TRANXIT lines from the [386enh] section of SYSTEM.INI.
  3. Switch to the \WINDOWS\INF folder (CD \WINDOWS\INF).
  4. Delete the following files if they exist (MDMGEN.INF, SXIR*.INF, NETMHZ.INF).
  5. Switch to the WINDOWS\INF\OTHER folder and delete the %MS*.INFfile if it exists.
  6. Run REGEDIT and look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, ENUM, PCMCIA, and delete any key with the XIRCOM name.
  7. In Device Manager, disable the generic serial port COM3.
  8. Go to the Control Panel, Power ICON, click on the PC Card modems tab. Remove the checkmark from the "Turn modems off when not in use" box. Click OK.
  9. Now insert the Xircom card and use the latest drivers from the Xircom website. The card should be recognized and configure itself. It should create a parent key in the device manager. (Multi-Function Adapters).
