Information

  • The computer prompts for the BIOS and hard drive passwords only when it is turned on, or after the reset button is pressed. The computer does not prompt for BIOS and hard drive passwords when it wakes up from the Standby state.

  • If both a BIOS password and hard drive password have been set, the computer will first prompt for the BIOS password, and then for the hard drive password.

  • CAUTION: It's not possible to defeat or remove a hard drive password. If the hard drive password is lost, the hard drive will be completely inaccessible, even if it is installed in a different computer.

To set a hard drive password on the computers listed above, follow this procedure:

  1. Format two 1.44MB diskettes. Label one "master password" and the other "user password".

  2. Start the computer, and boot to the MS-DOS prompt, rather than start Windows.

  3. Change to the DOS directory.

  4. Type "DISKPW". A menu appears with three choices.

  5. Choose option 2 to Set the hard disk drive master password, then press Enter.

A red warning screen appears, advising that access to any data on the hard drive will be impossible if you forget the password.

  6. If you wish to proceed, press the Y key.

  7. Type in a master password, then press Enter.

  8. Re-type this password when prompted, and press Enter.

A prompt for the master password diskette appears.

  9. Insert the master password diskette, press Enter, and press Enter again.

The master password is written to the diskette.

  10. Remove the master password diskette, and press the Spacebar on the keyboard.

  11. Press Y at the warning, if you wish to continue.

A message appears, advising that the master password has been registered.

  12. Press the Spacebar. The main menu appears.

  13. Choose option 1 to Set the hard disk drive user password, then press Enter.

A red warning screen appears, advising that access to any data on the hard drive will be impossible if you forget the password.

  14. If you wish to proceed, press Y.

    The red warning screen re-appears.

  15. To continue, press Y.

  16. Type in a user password, then press Enter.

  17. Re-type this password when prompted, and press Enter.

A prompt for the user password diskette appears.

  18. Insert the user password diskette, press Enter, and press Enter again.

The user password is written to the diskette.

  19. Remove the user password diskette, and press the Spacebar on the keyboard.

A final warning appears, advising that this is the last chance to not set hard disk drive passwords.

  20. To continue, press Y.

A message appears, advising that the user password has been registered.

  21. Press the spacebar. The main menu will appear.

  22.  Type 3, then press Enter to quit. The DOS prompt will appear.

The next time the computer is started, you'll be prompted for a BIOS password (if one is set), and then the hard disk user password.
