Information

In order to upgrade your Equium 6200M from a single to a dual processor configuration, you must also upgrade Microsoft Windows NT. This upgrade is designed to replace system files which are required to take advantage of the second processor, and to remove the Toshiba Advanced Power Management (APM) software, which will only work in a single processor environment.

Parts ordering information can be found at the end of this document.

Warning! Conversion of the Windows NT operating system to a dual processor configuration can not be reversed!

To upgrade the Windows NT operating system to take advantage of a second processor, use the following procedure.

Step 1
Obtain the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Resource Kit. This kit contains a program named UptoMP, which is designed to upgrade the operating system to a multi-processor configuration.

Step 2
De-install the Toshiba APM (this does not support a dual CPU environment). This is done by:

  • Remove the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TAPM_NT
  • Remove the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TAPM_M
  • Remove the registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\TAPM_K
  • Remove the following files from the \winnt\system32\drivers directory:
    tapm_nt.sys
    tapm_m.sys
    tapm_k.sys

Step 3
Make sure the Service Pack 2 directory and its contents are still on your system. This directory was pre-installed on your system at the factory in the directory C:\sp2\i386.  If you have deleted this directory for some reason, please restore it using the following steps:

  • Create the directory C:\sp2\i386
  • Insert the Service Pack 2 CD that came with your system into the CD ROM drive.
  • Copy the contents of the CD directory \i386 into the C:\sp2\i386 directory.

Step 4
Insert the Windows NT CD that accompanied your system, and copy the file txtsetup.sif from the CD directory \i386 to the C:\sp2\i386 directory. This will allow the UptoMP utility to run using the service pack 2 directory as the source for its upgrade files.

Step 5
Modify the file uptomp.inf, obtained with the UptoMP program in the Resource Kit, to include the following line (in the [SystemFilesToCopy] section):

win32k.sys = 0, 2, win32k.sys

Step 6
Run the UptoMP program obtained from the resource kit. Make sure the modified version of the uptomp.inf file is present in the same directory from which UptoMP is run. When this program requests the path for the HAL file, specify C:\sp2\i386.  After doing this, select the entry labeled MPS Multiprocessor PC in the HAL File to Install field of the dialog box, then click OK.

When the UptoMP program requests the path for the NT distribution files, specify C:\sp2\i386. Click OK,

The UptoMP program will install the multi-processor kernel after warning you that this procedure is not reversible.

Step 7
Shut the system down, install the second CPU and VRE (Voltage Regulator), and restart. The two processor kernel can be verified by observing the blue screen text mode portion of the system boot. A status message indicating the presence of two system processors and the multiprocessor kernel should appear.

Please note that this procedure must be used to re-apply the multi-processor kernel if the Service Pack 2 is ever re-applied. Also make sure any kernel patches or fixes from Microsoft that are applied are installed in their two processor configuration.
