- Issue
- After installing Norton AntiVirus for Windows 95 (NAV95) V 2.0, the computer will become unstable. Symptoms include locking up or getting General Protection Fault errors at the Windows 95 splash screen.
- Procedure
- Per Symantec tech support, the following steps are to be followed.
This problem is caused by how and when NAV2.0 AutoProtect loads when the computer starts. Perform one of the following solutions:
Solution 1
Perform the following steps:
- Restart to Safe Mode.
- Run Windows Explorer.
- Navigate to the \Program Files\Norton AntiVirus folder.
- Double click on the files APLD_RUN.REG and APMSGOFF.REG.
- Restart normally.
If this does not resolve the conflict try Solution 2.
Solution 2
Perform the following steps:
- Restart to Safe Mode.
- Load Norton AntiVirus NAVW32.EXE and disable the LOAD AUTOPROTECT AT STARTUP option.
- Restart.
- Manually run the program NAVAPW32.EXE.
- If it loads, create a shortcut for NAVAPW32.EXE and place in the startup group.
- Restart.
If the previous steps fail, you may need to download the latest SYMEVNT file(s). These are available by FTP from the following location:
