BIOS Installation CD fails to start the BIOS update, and displays "Bad command or filename - xxxx"

Issue


The BIOS Installation CD may fail to start the BIOS update, and may display "Bad command or filename - xxxx". 

This problem is dependent upon the SATA Controller setting in the computer's BIOS Setup. The default setting is AHCI Mode (Advanced Host Controller Interface), but for BIOS updates, the setting must be changed to Compatibility mode.

Resolution


If this happens, follow the steps below to change the SATA Controller Mode setting in BIOS Setup from AHCI mode to Compatibility mode.
 

1. Press the Power button to turn the computer On, and them immediately press the F2 key (while the Toshiba logo is displayed, as shown below).

The BIOS Setup Utility appears, as shown below.

2. Press the right arrow key to switch to the Advanced page, and then press the down arrow key until SATA Controller Mode is highlighted (see picture below).

3. Press the space bar to choose Compatibility (see below).

4.  Press the F10 key, and select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart.

Continue with the steps below to update the computer's BIOS from the BIOS Installation CD.

5. Immediately after the computer restarts (while the Toshiba logo is displayed), press the F12 key.

The Boot Menu appears (below).

6. Use the arrow keys to select CD/DVD and press Enter to boot the computer from the BIOS Installation CD.

The BIOS update will start automatically, and the computer will turn off.

7. Press the Power button to turn the computer On, and them immediately press the F2 key (while the Toshiba logo is displayed, as shown below).

The BIOS Setup Utility appears.

8. Make a note of any settings you have previously changed -- such as the mode setting for USB Sleep-and-Charge ports.

9. Press F9 to restore all default settings, and then press F10, and select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart.

10. If you need to re-establish any BIOS Setup settings, press the F2 key again, while the Toshiba logo is displayed. Change the settings, and then press F10, and select Yes (Exit Saving Changes). The computer will restart, and will now be ready for use.
