- Issue
Users may have problems connecting to the internet even when the PC is connected to an Access Point. Generally a limited connectivity message will be displayed for the wireless network connection.
Typically this type of problem is caused by a bad AP to modem connection or issues with the AP internet access. However, we are finding cases where the problem is in the PC network control.
- Resolution
The Windows Network Diagnostics can be used to identify and resolve most network problems. From the task bar, on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen, right click on the wired or wireless icon with the problem. Select Troubleshoot problems from the menu. Go through the troubleshooter which will reset the networks adapters and diagnose the problem. If the troubleshooter does not resolve the problem a complete shutdown of the computer may be necessary.
To perform a complete shutdown move your mouse to the left-hand corner of the screen and right-click the Start button or press Windows logo key+X on the keyboard. Next while holding the Shift key down tap or click shut down. Holding down the shift key is required to perform a complete shutdown. After powering up the notebook check the network connection status. In some cases a second complete shutdown may be required to resolve the problem.
Once you have cleared up the limited connectivity verify you have the latest network adapter driver installed. To do this press the Windows + X keys at the same time. Next select Device Manager and expand the Network Adapter section. Right click on your Wireless card and select Update Driver Software. Next select Search automatically for update driver software. Windows will either install the latest driver or inform you that you have the latest driver installed.
Also confirm that the Update for Microsoft Windows (KB3097617) has been installed. This can be confirmed by searching and checking View installed updates. If it has not been installed follow these step:
1. Launch Internet Explorer browser. The new default browser in Windows 10, Microsoft Edge, does not support this process.
2. Select this link to KB3097617.
3. If prompted to install a Microsoft Update Catalog add-on, select Install.
4. Select the Add button next to Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3097617).Shown by scrolling the view below to the right.
5. Select view basket (1).
6. On the next screen select the Download button.
7. Select a download location when prompted.
8. Allow the Microsoft Update Catalog to make changes to your PC if prompted.
9, After the update has been downloaded, launch the installer from the downloaded location.
10. Restart your PC after the installation.
